Summer is the perfect time to read! While traveling, next to a pool, lounging on my patio, or simply by the late evening sunshine, I just love summer reading. One of my intentions is to read more than last year and hopefully find some great reads…and so far, I have done both. Here are a few of my favorites for your summer reading. I hope you grab one (or all), find the perfect time to read, and enjoy them as much as I did!
Favorites so far…
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
Such an interesting viewpoint for a story to unfold-via correspondence. Through personal writing, we learn of a life built through love, loss, regret, and learning to reconcile those regrets. Poignant and heartwarming, this is a favorite of the year so far for me. Soon to be a movie, which I will definitely see!
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Having previously glanced at this book and now finally read it, it’s one of my all-time favorites! An intricately woven story of loss, friendship, and the power of us all as remarkably bright creatures. Worth the read and even better was listening to the audio version with Marin Ireland and Michael Urie-his voice of Marcellus made the story come alive! Just released as a movie and while I love Sally Field and appreciated the movie, the book, with its many more nuances, is worth reading first.
Everyone should read this book! Heartfelt with a bit of mystery, it kept my interest with wonderful writing. Simultaneously, the storyline encouraged community and caring for one another that seems to be less important in today’s world. The ending was a bit different than imagined but nonetheless, I highly recommend it for all. I don’t often reread books, but feel this may be one I read again and gift to others!
Procrastination Proof by Jon Acuff
This quick non-fiction read is practical, funny, applicable, and encouraging! With his typical fun style of productivity insight, Jon Acuff again hits a home run! Years in the making, we see ourselves in his examples and feel empowered by his easy to apply system. Thanks again for making motivation fun, Jon! Highly recommend it to anyone because we all procrastinate on something!
The Water Keeper by Charles Martin
Moved along by the action and taken in by the story, this is another favorite of the year so far. The subtle yet overarching theme of redemption and saving the lost was not “lost” on me and one of my favorite things about this book. While much of what happens seems overly coincidental, I still thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, appreciated the way it was told, and how it unfolded. I am already continuing the series.
Honorable Mention
Purple State by Dana Perino A fun read based on a real town and real life, especially the importance of friendship. A political book that isn’t too political and a love story (or three) that isn’t too serious. An enjoyable and easy to read book-perfect for summer!
