The Joyful Habit of Reading

The past few years, I’ve returned to the joyful habit of reading. It’s a way to escape, learn, engage my brain, and do something for just me. While that may sound boring to you, it’s been so enjoyable! This year on Goodreads, I challenged myself to read 25 books, which I’ve just surpassed! I’m happy to share my fall favorites with you, just in time to order for all those readers on your list (or to gift yourself)!

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah-One of the best books I’ve read this year and there have been some good ones! While the difficult subject matter was at times uncomfortable, it was also realistic. engaging, and took me to new territory literally in Alaska but also seeing another perspective of abuse and abusers. (Warning-some content may be triggering for some).

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett– More interesting than I originally imagined but probably influenced by the amazing narration of the audio book on Audible by Meryl Streep. It’s the story of how one life evolves and is influenced by all the choices made along the way.

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly (Lincoln Lawyer book 2), The Reversal by Michael Connelly (Lincoln Lawyer book 3), and The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly (Lincoln Lawyer book 4) were all listened to with my husband as we road tripped and traveled. An interesting way for us to enjoy books together, while making the trips go by quickly.

Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica– An interesting and twisting mystery about seemingly benign neighbors and how small choices have ripple effects for all those around them.

Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie (Book Two of Tommy & Tuppence Mystery Series) This is set post WW1 as the two young detectives embark on a series of short mysteries while they work to solve a larger case. A fun, fast, enjoyable listen.

Happy Place by Emily Henry-the perfect read for my beach vacation this fall (ironically read at one of my happy places)! An easy to read, funny, interesting twist on friends that become family and how relationships change over time. Another hit by Emily Henry!

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker This is a complex mystery, love story, and saga of friendship, hope, and what we will do for others when hope is lost. This also went to the top of my list for this year.

Unexpected by Christine Caine– Read this for a fall Bible study and appreciated all the insight and Biblical references to use as we navigate unexpected circumstances in life. A great gift for someone struggling with unexpected change in their life.

Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things by Adam Grant– I’ve started this and it’s already dogeared, highlighted, and written in! On my “to finish” list by the end of year to begin 2025 with a bang!

As we enter next into the season of Advent, let’s take some time to reflect on the reason for the season. I love my line a day journal to do this. If you’d like a simpler version, check out the Prayer, Scripture writing, or Gratitude versions of these journals.

I can’t wait to find my next read. If you want even more book ideas too, find the first half of my list in my Reading and Serving post. I hope some (or all) of these find their way under the tree, into stockings, and/or into your to-read lists for this upcoming holiday and winter season. It’s been a fun year gifting myself with the joyful habit of reading. I hope this encourages you to do the same for yourself or someone you love!
