Being Rooted

Ask anyone who picks a ‘word’ for the year and very often what happens related to the word is enlightening. While no major aha moments were revealed, my year of being rooted was certainly an enlightening experience. I learned some things, but overall, it was a year of growth, just like we’d expect with the word ‘rooted’. Here are a few takeaways:

Being Rooted:

  1. Creates strength and stability. Digging deeper into my faith and staying connected to Jesus was a big part of my efforts on being rooted. It wasn’t anything specific, just a series of choices, like beginning and ending the day with prayer and connection with God. But those choices created strength and a stable base of faith to make other choices easier. In the past, I may have listened to or chosen more worldly options, but being rooted allowed to me think and act essentially like the ‘90’s phrase What Would Jesus Do?
  2. Allows us to Bend, Not Break. Just like those roots that reach deep into the water like my verse of this year reminds us, I was able to bend and not break when life turned up the heat. There were multiple times this year I felt more flexible and relaxed because I was seeking Jesus in prayer instead of worrying about an unwanted or troublesome situation. The ability to seek Jesus instead of worrying grew as I purposefully chose Him more each day. This flexibility also allowed me to bear fruit in expected and also unexpected ways. As we move into a new year, I will stay rooted and hopefully bear even more fruit as Jesus reminded his disciples:

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. ~John 15:4

  1. Provides Peace. Living rooted in Jesus allowed me to let go of trying to control things and experience more peace. What a blessing to have moving forward and I am thankful God has provided increasing peace as I trust Him more. My purposeful choices to be rooted in Him allow me to hold my plans, people, and life loosely, trusting God is in control. I don’t need to worry or control everything because that’s God’s job, not mine. This ongoing awareness has led me to continue to seek His peace…

Looking Forward to Peace

One of the biggest takeaways of being rooted in Jesus has been the increasing peace I’m experiencing as I grow those roots. While reflecting and seeking next year’s word and verse, the word peace kept resurfacing as did the verse

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. ~John 14:27

Jesus shared this verse with the disciples on the night he was betrayed and arrested. He knew they’d be scared and worried, yet He gave and told them to rest in his peace, unlike anything the world could give. This is what I want to continue to pursue and live in-His peace. So there’s my focus and word for the next year: peace.

Being rooted has led me to strengthen my faith, bear more fruit, be more flexible, and let go of control as I dig into Him. I will continue to purposefully seek Him and look forward to accepting and learning more about His gift of peace into the next year. May God’s peace be with us all as we live rooted in Him.
