Transforming Thoughts

Ever hear the saying “Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it”?  I like that phrase, because much of life is “how we take it”-our thoughts and subsequent actions based on said thoughts.  Perception can become reality in our minds.

In Paul’s letter to the Romans chapter 12 verse 2 he says:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. NLT

To transform means to change completely for the better, to undergo total change.  Paul is saying God will transform us or change us completely for the better, by changing the way we think.  In return, we will learn God’s will for our lives. Let God transform you

I have often wondered how to know what God wants me to do-what is His will for my life.  I ask, pray and seek His direction, but wonder if what I’m thinking is God’s will or mine.  So if the Bible tells me to let God change the way I think, how do I do that?

Here’s the beauty of the message:  I don’t DO anything.  God does.

I just seek Him and His will. God does it all.  He will help me so I don’t give in to worldly temptations.  He will change me and the way I think.  Then, I will then learn God’s will for me.

Paul had a similar message in his letter to the Philippians in chapter 4, verse 8:

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. NLT

Seek Him, fix our thoughts on what is excellent and God will help us.  It’s a practice what you believe type of thing. What we put into our mind with TV, internet, social media, apps, books and magazines is important.  It impacts the way we think.

Reading God’s Word daily helps us to focus on Him.  How can I know His ways without reinforcing them daily?  Whether it’s a verse or a chapter or two, getting some of God’s Word into my life and the lives of my children is a great start to our day.

Seek, pray and let God transform you and your thoughts. His will and plan for our lives then become clearer.  It doesn’t mean all of sudden-eureka you get a plan.  It means you will know what comes next, which leads to the next thing and so on.

How do we change our thoughts?  We don’t, God does. Seeing life through God’s plan-that seems like the best way to take any day that comes.
